Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser from
Madrid. She was a fervent performer in her youth and even reenacted commercials
on TV to entertain the family. However, she decided to focus her attention on
dancing. After studying ballet for nine years in the Spanish National
Conservatory, she continued her studies under a group of highly acclaimed
dancers. She discovered her true calling at the age of 15, when she topped 300
girls at an audition for a talent agency. The contract she was offered secured
her roles on Spanish television shows , as well as music videos. This opened

a film in The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth) and then briefly in
the Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her next film was the Oscar-winning
Belle Epoque (1992), in which she played one of the four sisters fighting for

continued to grow by 3-4 films per year, and soon Cruz was an established star
in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to
work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her
ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in
the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in
Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes
changed when she won a Best Actress Goya for the movie-industry comedy La Nina
De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz was able to travel to films in English, but All About
My Mother (1999) was her first major international hit. She played an unchaste
but well-meaning nun. When the film was lavishly adorned with accolades and
awards, Cruz suddenly found herself being sought after on both sides of the
Atlantic. The American comedy Woman on Top (2001), which was her next major
project, is about Chefs who have remarkable culinary talents and serious motion
